An exotic pet certainly seems to suit some people, and you may feel that it would be the ideal accessory to go with your designer labels and cosmopolitan lifestyle. Think it through before you rush out to find your exotic pet.

An exotic pet is a wild animal, generally not domesticated or found living in people’s homes. The broad definition includes birds, rodents and reptiles as well as other species. Unlike domesticated animals, your home is not their natural environment.

Although you may think an exotic pet is the ideal accessory, taking them from their natural habitat can be difficult as they are not tame or domesticated. Exotic pets have been known to attack people, even their owners.

Care and Feeding of Exotic Animals

Do you know where to find the food your exotic pet eats? Or how much to feed it? Most wild animals catch and eat as much as they can in the wild to ensure survival. Overfeeding an exotic pet is unhealthy, and underfeeding it will add to the frustration and possible aggression of the animal. Consider also that many of them need live food – not always a pleasant task for the owner.

Exotic pets have exotic illnesses too, ones your local vet may not know how to treat. Are you ready for the additional time, travel and expense you will incur to find a specialist vet who can treat your exotic pet’s illness?

Do You Know the Laws Regarding Your Pet?

There are laws governing ownership of exotic pets, and they differ depending on your location. You may need a permit or special license, so do some research before you go out and buy your pet.

Some localities require that you keep your exotic pet within the confines of your property. If this is the case, make sure that you have installed secure enclosures to prevent the animal from escaping. Once they are out in the neighborhood, the unfamiliar surroundings can frighten them and provoke a normally timid animal to attack. Pet buyers must understand that exotic animal are made available to the public for one reason, there is a market for these animals. It is the demand that drives the business. As a wise man once said, “just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you should.” Now apply that theory to the purchase of a new pet. You may have the ability to buy the animal, but is it wise?

While feeding a leopard gecko is definitely more complicated than feeding a pet dog or cat, many lizard enthusiasts will be the first to tell you that these are the most rewarding pets.

Leopard Geckos, originating in the desert regions of the Middle East, are insectivores. Contrary to human nutritional tenets, these lizards do not benefit from fruits and vegetables. While there are many other things these reptiles consume (locusts, waxworms, cockroaches), their main menu consists of two items: crickets and mealworms.

Crickets are excellent leopard gecko feed. Since they move around quite a bit, they serve another purpose: during mealtimes, they simulate the hunting scenario the lizards would experience in the wild. This is healthy, as your leopard gecko needs exercise and stimulation. Crickets are also easily available and are arguably the most nutritious of the leopard gecko feed options. Crickets also have a thinner protective covering than mealworms. This makes them easier on your gecko’s digestive system.

Of course, these creatures do come with some issues. Part of the package deal includes a hell of a lot of noise. Remember that feeding your gecko crickets isn’t all that simple. You will need to set up housing and feed for these critters. Remember not to put more crickets in your vivarium than your gecko can eat. The uneaten crickets will pester your lizards.

Mealworms on the other hand, are relatively trouble free. You only need to put them in a shallow pan and feed them to geckos. They also do have a very high fat content which can be both detrimental AND beneficial to your pet. Mealworms, however tend to bury themselves into the substrate. Feeding time can quickly turn into a tiring game of hide and seek. Since they don’t move around as much, they are not as stimulating. To resolve this, during gutloading (the process of feeding your feed), you may put some cricket dust (which you can buy in pet stores) into their pan. The cricket dust annoys them and makes them move around, getting them covered in the nutritious cricket food, and makes them stimulating to your gecko.

Many leopard gecko handlers use mealworms as an occasional treat rather than a part of their everyday meals. Other gecko enthusiasts beg to differ and are advocates of mealworms as a staple food.

As with all great endeavors, it is all a matter of trial and error. Let’s hope you find the right mix to help your gecko become strong, healthy and fruitful!

If you have met the basic light, heating, space and humidity requirements of an iguana habitat, you might think that your work is all done. However, it should be stated that those are just the basic parts of an iguana habitat. This means that although these factors alone will let your iguana survive, these may not necessarily allow your iguana to thrive. In order to assure the best of health for your iguana, the iguana habitat should have these accessories:

1) Substrates – this is the material used to cover the surface of your iguana’s habitat. The number one thing to keep in mind for the substrate is your iguana’s safety. You should never use any kind of material that might harm your iguana if it should accidentally (or on purpose!) eat it. Remember that iguana’s flick their tongues constantly to test their environment. Anything like gravel, sand or wood chips can stick to the tongue and be ingested by your iguana, and this can be very dangerous.

Instead of these materials, you might try blank news stock or some other non-toxic paper. Another common substrate is indoor/outdoor carpet, or artificial turf. Many people prefer using linoleum tiles for the ease in cleaning.

2) Basking and climbing accessories – Iguanas are arboreal. In the wild, iguanas spend most of their time up on trees. This means that you need to provide some sort of climbing material in your iguana habitat. Try including some shelves in an iguana habitat to simulate branches of trees.

The branches you provide for your iguana should appropriate for the size of your iguana, and should provide support for him to rest comfortably. You may want to consider wrapping larger branches in carpet to facilitate climbing. This will give your iguana comfortable spots where they can bask and relax.

3) Food and water bowls – Iguanas need to have dishes provided for their food and water. While iguanas don’t typically drink water often, it is still necessary for you to provide clean, fresh water for them every day.

Iguanas love to soak in a water dish, so you should provide one that’s just the right size for your pet. It should be big enough so that the iguana won’t tip it over when getting in and it should be shallow enough so that the iguana won’t drown. You should also realize that after soaking, an iguana usually likes to poop in the water. This means that you will have the responsibility to change the water in the dish and sanitize it regularly.

4) Like people, iguanas sometimes like to have their privacy too. To that end, you should provides some sort of hiding area in the habitat. This could consist of a large rock, a log, or even a small leaning piece of plywood; any sort of shelter that provides the iguana a little bit of privacy.

These supplies will provide your iguana with the best possible habitat. You’ll also be providing a home that gives your iguana a sense of safety and security, leading to less stress and better health.

If you have a growing iguana, you may find that you need to construct a custom reptile cage for it. Adult iguanas get very big, so you’ll need to take a look around your house to find an appropriate spot. You may want to build outside, or it may be simpler for you to build in an empty room or the garage. You might even be able to make use of an unused closet.

Iguanas must have a cage that gives them lots of room to move around without restriction, and the home also needs to be tall enough for them to climb. The habitat needs to be 1-1/2 times as long as the iguana, at minimum, and deep enough for the iguana to turn around comfortably. Full grown green iguanas will also need a habitat that is at least 6 feet tall, with plenty of space for climbing. You’ll also need to be sure that the structure is properly maintained for both humidity levels and temperature, and of course, it will need to be secure against escape.

A closet is fairly easy to secure for use as a home for smaller iguanas. It’s a very easy matter to remove the door and replace it with a screen door or frame. Some people prefer to use Plexiglas, which also works great, but you’ll want to make sure that you head off overheating by allowing for plenty of ventilation. An enclosed area like a closet makes it easier to maintain variables like humidity and temperature. You can use the area above the closet rod for affixing basking and UV lights, after blocking it off with a screen panel.

If your iguana is more than four feet in length, you may be best off building him an outdoor enclosure. As long as you live in a warmer climate, iguanas can do quite well outside, but if they will need to be protected from low temperatures when the the weather gets colder. It may help to have an indoor area, like a garage to use in cooler months. An advantage of outdoor enclosures is that it allows your iguana the opportunity to bask in natural UV rays from the sun, which is so important for it’s health.

These ideas for large reptile cages are just a few of the possible solutions for bigger lizards. There are plenty of ways you can customize your pet’s habitat to make it more comfortable. Use your imagination, and remember that the proper enclosure will help your pet live a healthier and longer life.

These tips for providing a home for your pet iguana are just scratching the surface.

Many reasons and motives are behind the recent trend towards owning unique or rare pets. One of the driving forces are environmental and conservation efforts. By helping the average person have increased contact with these animals they will be more likely to be conscious of their actions that may affect the well-being of these animals. Owning caring for a marsupial is more important now than it was every before.

Getting ready to bring home a unique animal is in many respects not that much different than preparing to bring home any domestic pet. The greater responsibility comes in when you take precautions against the possibility of the animal harming people. While any animal, domestic or otherwise always carries this chance, the risk is increased when you are dealing with a creature that is not normally breed to be in a home environment.

As with any pet, you have got to do your research first. The only way that you can meet the needs of any animal is to know about those needs first. This is no different than for a dog or cat. Just as an example, you would need to know what the attention needs of the animal are.

Do they require much attention? Are they good around children? These are normal questions for any potential pert owner. The questions go a good deal further when bringing home an unusual pet. You need to learn about their natural habits and environment.

Finding out about their natural habitat is very important. If you want to provide them with a proper environment to flourish in at home then you need to know about their natural home. Pay close attention to how much space is needed. A small enclosure will never do for a larger animal that is used to being able to roam about. If they are used to climbing and jumping you will need somewhere tall with differing levels to jump to and from.

The cleaning habits of different animals can vary greatly. Just as an example, take cats and dogs. Domestic dogs need help from their human companions to get clean with soap and water. Cats on the other hand, bathe themselves quite regularly by licking. They are genetically designed to do so. What will the needs be of your animal? Will it require soap and water like a dog, or is a roll in some dust all that is needed?

Besides knowing what food the animal eats, it is equally important to know about what it absolutely should avoid eating. Some of them have very delicate digestive systems that can be damaged should the diet be inappropriate in any way. Allowing them to pick up the last piece of pizza is not an acceptable thing to do. Remember, you want to do your best to keep it in the best possible health.

Be sure that you find a good veterinarian that to provide care for your pet. Chances are the neighborhood vet that is around the corner will not suffice. You may actually need to consult with a zoo or conservation society in order to get in touch with someone who can assist you in owning caring for a marsupial. This is again something that you should research and take care of before bringing home your new and unusual pet.

If you plan on owning a marsupial, then it is critical that you read articles and learn how to care for them. You should do this ahead of time, getting the pet. The articles will teach you how to take care of the pet and what they eat as well as the temperature that they prefer.

There are a number of wild animals – living among us and abroad. Studying about the wild animals who live in the USA and other countries is quite interesting.

It is noteworthy to discuss some wildlife in particular, including green sea turtles, wood ducks, bison, gray wolves, and grizzly bears. All of these divergent animals will be studied in fine detail going forward.

On a starting note, sea turtles can typically be found on beaches within the United States’ Southeastern coastline, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the VI. The shells of green sea turtles are in fax a mixture of black, gray, brown, and olive tones; their skin is tinted green. These reptiles are big and can grow to be as large as 4 feet and 400 pounds. They eat algae and seagrass, and younger sea turtles consume worms and insects on top of this. Green sea turtles can live to be up to 100 years old, and they mate every 3-4 years.

Another kind of animal found in the wilderness is the wood duck, and these birds reside in the USA. These pretty birds breed in specially made duck boxes and in the hollow centers of trees. Male wood ducks are among the most easily recognizable birds existing in the USA, as they have six colors which are present during the season when the birds mate. The wood ducks’ mating season takes place from the autumn months through the early summer. These birds are about nineteen inches in length, and they eat mainly fish as youngsters and plant matter as they get older. They could live to be about four years old if left in the wild and into the teens when in captivity.

Bison live in the wild and also go by the name buffalo. They are the biggest terrestrial animals in the US and Canada. Bison utilize their heads in the process of fighting with each other, and their horns have the potential to grow as high as 2 feet long. Their height can surpass 6 feet, and males can reach an astounding two tons while females’ weight can get as high as 900 pounds. They consume primarily plants and live to be around 20 years old. A lot of bison who are wild can be located in a Canadian national park and in Yellowstone National Park. Wolves and grizzly bears are both predators of bison.

Gray wolves can be delineated as canines, and they live in North America. They resemble German Shepherd dogs. Depending on where they live, the sizes of these animals vary greatly. Wolves in the south are smaller than those up north. Gray wolves are 3 to 5 feet long on average. The females can weigh anywhere from 60 to 100 pounds, and males weigh in from 70 to 145 pounds. They can eat a staggering 20 pounds of meat or more in one sitting, and they have a taste for large animals with hooves. They can live from 8 to 13 years old and travel in packs. They will travel as much as they need to in order to find food.

Last but not least, grizzly bears are another kind of wild animal. It should be noted that while all grizzly bears are brown, not all brown bears are grizzly bears. These animals prefer to reside in warmer climates such as the Pacific Northwest. They fish along rivers. Grizzly bears eat both meat and plants and can live up to twenty-five years old. Due to excessive over hunting, grizzlies are endangered species. There are currently fewer than 1500 of them in the USA.

In conclusion, there are many wild animals living in the US and abroad, and there is so much to learn about them. Some of these animals include green sea turtles, wood ducks, bison, gray wolves, and grizzly bears.

When it comes to wild animals and research about them, it can be a amazing experience. You can make tons of articles online about animals and what they do in the habitat. This can provide people out there a knowledge about how the animal live.

Green Iguanas, also knows by their Latin name Iguana Iguana, come from tropical areas of Central and South America. They are a large lizard, often growing up to 6 feet in captivity, if they are well fed and housed properly. They have long tails which make up about half of their length.

Despite the name ‘green iguana’, the color of your iguana as it grows may actually change. Although typically a brilliant emerald green when young, their color can change to a duller green or even a grayish or brownish-red color. You may also notice black stripes on them. The amount of sun your iguana receives will affect the color of its skin.

Iguanas are tree dwelling – or arboreal – animals, and pass most of their day climbing around in trees, eating leaves, fruit and flowers. Being up in the branches of the trees also helps them avoid being prey to predator animals that eat iguanas. Iguanas have several physical adaptations that make them perfectly suited to living in the treetops. Their striped green coloring is a great camouflage for them as they crawl among the branches and leaves of the trees. They have feet with long ‘fingers’ and claws that are especially suited to climbing and grasping the branches, and their long tail help them maintain their balance.

Despite their fearsome appearance, iguanas are vegetarians that are hunted as prey by other animals. They have developed keen senses that allow them to avoid predators. With their keen senses of hearing, smell and sight, they can often detect predators long before the predator knows the iguana is around.

One of the iguana’s best defense mechanisms is it’s tail, and it can use it in various ways to protect itself. Not only does it help with balance as the iguana jumps from branch to branch, it can be used as a weapon. Iguanas will swing their tails like a whip when cornered or if they feel threatened. Also, iguanas are very good swimmers, and can use their tail as a rudder when making their getaway.

Iguanas have a few other adaptations that help in their survival in the wild. They’re quite tough, and can survive falls from high in the trees. Male iguanas have a fold of skin under their chin, called a ‘dewlap’. This flap of skin is used to make the iguana appear larger to any threat, and is also used to impress the lady iguanas. Finally, iguanas store fat around their chin and neck during times when they find plenty of food, and this way are more able to survive when food is hard to find.

Lots of people keep iguanas as pets without knowing that they come from the tropics, and have specific habitat, food, and light requirements to survive as pets. If an iguana as pet isn’t cared for properly, they can die very slow and painful deaths. If you are thinking about getting an iguana, please start by learning about it’s care.

One can not just take his eyes away from hamster pups, as these teeny cute small creatures will sure have ones attention. Baby hamster are born with no fur and are closely attached to their mother. Even if you might have the desire to hold them, bare in mind that there’s absolutely nothing you can do inside two weeks time period following delivery.

REMEMBER TO NOT TOUCH THE BABIES!! Your actions may well harm the babies along with change it’s scent thus confuses the mother. She will assume that they’re not hers, abandon them and worst she may eat the babies (this did happened to my hamsters). To never cause any kind of stress to the mother, avoid cleaning up the cage during this time period. It is advisable to position the babies in the bottom of the cage as none of them have opened their eyes yet.

After this 2 weeks ‘vital’ period, you are able to hold them however just for a short period as not to disturb or perhaps stress the mother or babies. Also you can cleanup the cage and put fresh bedding in most of it. Remove only the soiled parts inside the nest area and put a good portion of the old bedding inside it. Place the babies back in the nest after it is cleaned up followed by the mother.

When the babies eyes are opened (which should take place on the 11-12 days, although some take less/more), they need to find out the way the bottle works. In order for them to reach it easily, place it lower and in a place where they will normally go. In the event that they have not at all worked out just how to use the bottle and you are therefore worried regarding them not drinking sufficient, you’ll be able to give them pieces of cucumbers in order to prevent dehydration. Don’t place drinking water inside a dish to stop them from falling in and drown or even get a cold.

At three weeks, you’ll be able to separate the babies should you see any kind of fighting among them however, if they seem to be immature, less developed and also not quite independent enough to leave mom at this time, let them stay together right up until they’re 4 weeks old. Once they reach 5 weeks old, independent and have a healthy development, they usually are put into new homes and play throughout new surroundings and environment.

The species of snake called the spitting cobra is very unusual as it not only has a poisonous bite but it also spits venom into the eyes of its prey and aggressors. Contact of this venom with your eyes is very painful and can even blind you temporarily, therefore, if you get cobra venom in your eyes, irrigate them with water at once in order to prevent permanent tissue damage.

The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is also remarkable in this large family of snakes (elapidae) because it feeds almost entirely on other snakes with mice and small birds also falling prey to its poison.

The King Cobra sets another record in terms of size: it can get to nearly twenty feet long, which makes it the largest venomous snake in the world. The most recent discovery of a new cobra species was made in 2003, when a specimen was identified at a London Zoo as part of an illegal shipment of exotic pets.

DNA studies revealed that this new species of snake is similar to the red spitting cobra but has different genes. It seems to originate from an area between Sudan and Egypt and it has been called the ‘Nubian Spitting Cobra’.

Though highly dangerous when it senses a threat, a cobra will not attack if you leave it in peace, although the venomous spit can travel very accurately for two meters. If compared to the strike of a rattlesnake, the cobra is pretty slow in attack, and many bites prove blank, that is without envenomation.

According to a study conducted on Malaysian cobra snake victims only 55% of the bites involved venom release and the same statistics indicate a mortality rate of 10% for people bitten, since the toxins injected into the blood of the prey destroy the nerves (neurotoxin) , which induces respiratory failure half an hour after being bitten, giving you 30 minutes to get help.

The colouration of this snake is variable from light green-grey to black, whereas juveniles have alternate yellow and black bands. This snake is to be found all over south-eastern Asia.

If you are thinking of getting a new pet, and have considered existing pets and in particular a large snake such as a boa, it is imperative that you are aware of several factors and think them over carefully. Please consider the following two issues:

Size: The most common variety of boa constrictor, the boa constrictor imperator can grow as long as eight feet in length and if that fails to impress, perhaps the fact that the red tailed boa constrictor can grow even larger than ten feet or more will make you realise just how large and powerful these animals are. A fully matured snake that has managed to achieve this size will require a considerable amount of space, not to mention a regular supply of large prey such as rats or even rabbits.

The lifespan of a boa: If you are planning on purchasing a boa, then you need to be aware that you will need to be prepared for a long term commitment which can easily stretch as long as 30 years. You need to consider how you will accommodate your boa’s needs during the course of any major changes in your personal circumstances, what if you are taken to hospital for an extended period of time? Do you know of anyone who would be prepared to clean and feed a 10 foot snake for you?

Now that we have considered some of the practical issues, let us now raise another, equally important question: is a boa constrictor really worth all the hard work?

Snakes are classified as exotic pets and the amount of pleasure that they bring the lucky owners who are fortunate enough to own them is immeasurable. I speak from personal experience for I have owned and cared for a large number of different reptilian friends over the years, but it is the boas that really capture my heart. Some people take one look at them and feel fairly intimidated by them as they fear that they are dangerous or that the boa will strike at any moment. In reality, most captive boas are docile creatures indeed and to be perfectly blunt, they are probably much more frightened of you than you are of them. Just be gentle, patient and reassuring with them and give them the respect they deserve, since no matter how docile they seem they are still large and powerful animals.

Whilst there can be no denying that snakes require a very precise regime of temperature, humidity and diet, they are actually very low maintenance. Cats and dogs maybe the more popular forms of pets but if truth be told, the reality of the matter is that they can be a major burden on their owner. This is because the owner has to contend with their constant demands for exercise, food, attention and the cat/dog will not stop whining until they get what they want. The snake on the other hand, will require only a few minutes each day and otherwise can be left alone.

Boa constrictors are gorgeous, docile and simply awesome pets which can bring a considerable amount of happiness to the right kind of person. You may find it of some practical use if you were to speak with fellow boa constrictor owners and get their opinion on the matter. Whilst they maybe a little biased in favour of owning a boa as a pet, they will be able to tell you what problems you may encounter. Do your research, read up on the subject, speak with other reptile keepers and make your decision carefully, but if you do choose to keep snakes I’m sure you won’t regret the decision!
