Ferrets Are Fun Pets

by Margaret Reddin

Ferrets make great pets and you should investigate ferrets if you are looking to get a pet but do not want a fish, cat or dog. Ferrets are popular because they show affection, love to play and can easily show when they are happy. When a ferret is active and having fun it can easily double as entertainment as ferrets are great at doing stunts. Ferrets do not like to be held for a long time so if you want a nice cuddly pet I would suggest getting a kitten.

Ferrets will follow you around all day long and want to be involved in anything you are doing. They will spend the majority of the day sleeping but tend to become very active at dusk and dawn. Ferrets are usually more nocturnal than daytime animals, as this is when they hunt. Ferrets are also pack rats and will steal any object they find interesting and can carry. They will also fall asleep in the oddest of places. If you can’t find your ferret then check the laundry basket or any open drawers.

They make excellent pets if you cannot be at home during the day- as they make very little noise and are actually very solitary animals. Ferrets tend to become devoted to one person their entire lives, or bond with a mate. It is possible to go off to work for the day and leave your ferret at home and they will be fine. All a ferret really needs is food, water, a litter box and a comfy place to sleep. Just make sure they can exercise for an hour or two each day.

The food you feed your ferret needs to be made specifically for ferrets as they have very particular nutritional requirements. Ferrets cannot live on cat or dog food as they are carnivores and need a high protein, high energy diet with only small amounts of fiber. There are foods specifically made for ferrets. In order to make sure your ferret does not become a picky eater it is important to change flavors and brands otherwise they may refuse to eat putting you in a tight spot if a brand is discontinued.

Ferrets are not very expensive to have as a pet. One of the largest costs is in the initial purchase as you will need to obtain the ferret from a breeder. Of course we recommend you check out your local ferret rescue before picking up your new friend. They may have just the one love need a special home.

Pet ferrets also should be neutered or spayed and the cost of this will depend on where you have it done. Many states and cities will require a license in order to keep a ferret as a pet and some states, such as California, ferrets are forbidden as pets.
