Peanut Butter is Safe for Dog Treats

Many people wonder if you can make dog treats that include peanut butter. I feel that this question is frequently asked because many people have discovered that nuts are not acceptable for dogs. It has been noted that several groups of nuts like Macadamia and walnuts are exceedingly harmful.

The concern with feeding nuts to dogs is that several of these may become toxic over time. This is due to the large phosphorous levels and secondar ingredients that may become even more toxic over time. These levels of toxicity can cause both kidney and bladder concerns. In the most serious instances these levels may actually become fatal. It should also be kept in mind that several brands of chocolate also include nuts.

There is good news for those of us that want to use peanut butter as an aid in administering medication, rewarding our dogs with peanut butter dog biscuits or just sharing a bit on the tip of our finger. Peanuts are not actually nuts! In fact, peanuts are actually a species in the legume family (Fabaceae) to be specific. In other words, peanuts are really a type of bean!

As with any untested food product, it should initially be given in a small potion. Since dogs, just like humans, can have food allergies, care should be taken. If an allergic reaction is suspected, discontinue the feeding and watch your dog closely. Just like many items, there can be an upside and a downside. The protein level of peanut butter is high but so are the calories. You can always choose an organic item if you are concerned about added preservatives.

To conclude, peanut butter has not been found to be harmful to dogs. Since many products include additional ingredients it makes sense to read the label. Although we think our dogs are almost human, they really can’t make good decisions when it comes to their health. My dogs are elated since they love peanut butter dog treats.
