Popular Costumes for Halloween

How does the National Retail Federation come up with their list of popular Halloween Costumes a month before Halloween happens? They take into consideration what is popular at the movies, on TV, in Music and world news. They always throw in a few of the perennial favorites that have been around for years – Princesses, Vampires, Witches, Fairies and Disney Characters.

Popular Teen Costumes tend to fall into the Gothic sub-culture. Skulls, black and darkness are predominant. These costumes from the darker side of Halloween range from Vampires/Witches to Fallen Angels/Demons.

Most parents choose sweet costumes for their babies. Disney Characters and Animals are at the top of the list. As young children begin to decide on their own costumes, they are influenced by TV, Movies and Cartoon Characters. Princesses, Fairies, Spider Man, Witch, Star Wars, Pumpkin, Ghost and Power Ranger are the most popular costume choices.

Adult costume choices are sometimes influenced by whether or not they need to be a couples costume or not. The choices are more limited if you choose to go in couples costumes. Being creative can help you pair up 2 seemingly unrelated costumes. Online costumes shops have some great choices if you need to go as couples – Bowling Ball and Pin, Matador and Bull; Plug and Socket, Vampire and Vampira.

If you make your own costume you don’t need sewing skills. It is helpful if you do, but it isn’t necessary. Creativity is more essential. If you aren’t creative, do research on the web to get ideas. Check out your closet, attic and basement for items to use as part of your costume.

The safety of your children while they are trick or treating is very important. Stitch some reflective material around the cuffs and ankles of their costumes. If your child has a mask as part of their costume, ensure that they can see where they are going. Using makeup instead of a mask is always a good solution. I also advise my children to not eat any of their goodies until they reach back home. Adults should inspect the loot before children start to eat.

Your cat or dog is a member of the family, so why not let them dress up. Some pets remain at home and greet the little trick-or-treaters, while some pets accompany the other family members on the door-to-door parade. Research the web to see all the pet costumes that are available. Halloween is a fun day for everyone, including your pet.

How will you decide what costume to wear this year? Do some research online. If the costume is not for you, you will need to solicit ideas from the wearer. If you decide to purchase your costume, shop for the best deal. Some costumes include accessories and some don’t. Be sure to read the descriptions of what is included. Purchase early so that you aren’t disappointed and have to start the process all over again.
