If you plan on having an aquarium at home or in your office, one of the most important things you need to take care of is the fish food. This is especially important if you are a first-time aquarist. Buying the wrong types of food can be detrimental to the health and growth of your fish.

Prepared fish food and live food

Many pet stores offer both prepared fish food and live food, depending on the needs of your fish. Tropical fish and saltwater fish can survive on dry food, making it convenient for many hobbyists or aquarists. Dry fish food may be available in granule, pellet, or stick forms.

One of the biggest advantages in using dry foods is the longer shelf life. Because they lack moisture, you don’t have to worry about quality degradation and spoilage. Also, dry fish foods tend to float on the surface, making them ideal for top dwellers and species that love to stay mid-water.

Live fish food, on the other hand, is a treat for many fish types, although live fish food is quite expensive compared to prepared foods. Water fleas, white worms, brine shrimp, and earthworms are just some of the live foods found in many pet shops. You need to be careful with live food, however, as some of them may come with diseases.

Feeding your fish the right way

Different fish species have different feeding requirements so getting the needed information first of all is very important. You should know whether your fish is a herbivore, carnivore, or an omnivore. Once you understand what your fish actually needs, you will know which fish food to pick when visiting your pet store.

Not all fish have the same eating habits, so you need to understand whether you have a surface feeder, a bottom feeder, or one that likes to stay mid-water. Dry food is excellent for both top and bottom feeders, since pellets and granules will sink after settling on the surface for a while.

Buying only top quality fish food

A top quality fish food should contain fat and amino acids, and should be easily digestible as well. Fat provides energy, while amino acids are protein building blocks that keep the fish healthy.

Don’t forget to maintain a balanced diet for your fish as well, which can be achieved by combining dry fish food with live food.

Betta fish is suitable as pet fish because it has bright colors, such as blue, orange, red, green, yellow or turquoise. It is sometimes called Siamese fighting fish, and it was originally found in fresh waters, such as rice paddies, in Thailand and Cambodia. Aside from its bright colors, the betta fish has beautiful fan-like fins and tails.

First of all, you cannot use decorative vases as betta fish tanks because the space available for the fish is too small. You might see this kind of display in some of the pet shops that you visit in which a water lily is often placed on the top of the vase. Many people have the misconception that because betta fish can survive in tight spaces like in the rice paddies of Cambodia and Thailand where they came from, they can be made to live in confined spaces like a vase.

You will actually need a fish tank that has about two gallons of water to offer enough space for swimming. It has been observed that the betta fish loves to swim but if the space is limited, it can easily bump into something that may cause injury to its body such as its fan-like fins and tails. It must also be provided with access to the surface of the water because it has to breathe atmospheric air from time to time.

The betta fish has the advantage of not requiring as much dissolved oxygen in the water compared to other tropical fish but it still needs oxygen-rich and clean water. Therefore, it would be advisable to employ a filtration system to prevent contamination by bacteria, ammonia, decaying plants, and other harmful substances. Many filtration systems also create some kind of aeration and this could be adequate for the two-gallon tanks.

You need not purchase an aeration system because the filtration system can produce bubbles on the surface of the water. This would be sufficient for the needs of the betta fish for oxygen in the water.

There are many kinds of available food for betta fish and you can buy them in the form of flakes or pellets for your convenience. You can also purchase those that have been frozen or freeze dried but sometimes, it would also be advisable to buy some brine shrimp, glass worms, and blood worms to satisfy the betta fish’s carnivorous appetite.

You can purchase betta fish supplies like fish food that has been freeze dried or frozen, pellets, and flakes. However, you can also offer glass worms, blood worms, or brine shrimp because this fish is carnivorous. Some bettas may not like to eat pellets so always check first to see what your fish prefers. Uneaten pellets and flakes should be removed from the water because they can rot and produce toxins.

To take care of your betta fish, try to observe how it looks when it is healthy and note any changes in its appearance such as a change in color, when it fails to eat, or if it keeps on hiding. It would be best to consult someone who knows a lot about betta fish before you try to treat it with medication.

Setting up a fully functional aquarium does not merely require a fish tank and a stand. There are a few accessories you need to set up, and among the most important are fish tank heaters. Aquarium heaters help maintain the right temperature in the water, which is important if you want your fish and aquatic plants to thrive in an ideal environment.

There are many reasons why fish tanks need the most appropriate types of heaters. During cold weather, the temperature in the water also drops, and this is when your aquarium needs heating the most. In natural environments, such as rivers and lakes, the water temperature typically ranges from 18 to 30 degrees Celsius. A fish tank temperature of 25 to 27 degrees Celsius is normally fine for most fish species.

The heating in your fish tank should be properly distributed throughout, so you need to pick a heating device that fits the requirements of your tank. You also need to avoid placing a high wattage aquarium heater in a small fish tank, so you can keep the temperature at the ideal levels. Likewise, if you have a bigger tank, choose a heater that can accommodate its needs better.

If you must put some aquatic plants in your fish tank, setting up the right heater is highly necessary. Fish tank heaters do not merely keep the fish alive especially during wintry months; they provide enough heat for the plants too. In line with this, both the fish and the plants should require the same temperature in order to thrive.

Many types of aquarium fish are unable to breed if the water temperature is too low. Ideally, the temperature should be between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius. Fish tanks need to have sufficient heating, especially during cold season, so your fish will be able to breed without any difficulty.

Fish breeders need to note however that heating is just one of the many factors that affect the outcome of fish propagation. You also need to take into account the water current and pressure, as well as the chemistry in the water. The best way to monitor the water temperature successfully is to use a thermometer on a regular basis.

Fish are cold-blooded creatures; hence they do not generate body heat independently. Even in places with hotter climates, a fish tank heater is still important. This is because the water temperature can change drastically during the night. These fluctuations in their environment often make the fish uncomfortable, so heating the tank uniformly is important.

You might want to keep your aquarium covered, if you want the heating to take effect immediately. Before placing the aquarium heater, read the instructions on the label first to see if you are doing it the right way. Fish tank heaters keep your fish healthy and comfortable, so you need to take excellent care in choosing one that suits the temperature requirements of your fish.

by Darren Bradley

One of the main considerations in taking care of tropical fish is your selection of tropical fish tank. Since there are many tropical fish tanks to choose from, outlined here are the factors you need to consider in making your selection.

One of the main considerations is the size. Fish tanks come in different sizes and the right size depend on several things. One important factor is the type and number of fish that youre going to take care of. You dont want the fish to get too crowded in the tank. The general rule is bigger is better. Larger tanks give fish more room to swim in, and the larger volume of water helps reduce toxins and keeps the water pure for a long time.

Standard sizes you can choose from are 60 cm, 80 cm, 100 cm, and 120 cm tank sizes. The size that you would select would also depend on the behavior of the fish that youre getting. Marine tropical fish like to swim around, so a larger tank is what you should get. Also, if you get young fish, a larger tank would give fish sufficient room even if these grow up to be full-sized adults.

Next to consider is the construction and shape of the fish tank. For shapes, there are several, but in general, you can choose from rectangular and round aquariums. This is more a matter of taste and space available in your home.

About construction, you can select from glass and acrylic fish tanks. Glass is more affordable and resistant to scratches, although it is heavier and brittle. Acrylic is more expensive and prone to scratches, but it is more durable and lighter than glass. Glass is good for marine tropical fish as it has no problems with saltwater. If you have extra cash, acrylic is a good idea for you.

Next, you need to know the equipment that you need. Tropical fish tanks need special devices to ensure that tropical fish would survive in your aquarium. Aside from the basic setup, such as an aerator, filter, and lighting, you would also need a heater and a thermometer.

Remember that tropical fish came from a warm climate, thats why you need to simulate their original habitat conditions in the aquarium. To do that, youd need a heater to warm the water, and a thermometer to keep watch of the water temperature. Tropical fish are sensitive to subtle temperature changes, so having a heater and thermometer will protect the well-being and health of the fish.

These are some of the basic things you need to know in selecting a tropical fish tank. Keeping these things in mind will result to you getting the right fish tank for your tropical fish, which results to the healthy well-being of your pets. Aside from that, it would also result to your satisfaction in having tropical fish right at your own home.

Sometimes you may see some pet shops displaying betta fish in decorative vases and there is usually a water plant on top of the vase. The main problem here is that this fish has a labyrinth organ and has to breath a bit of atmospheric air when it gets to the top of the water. The vase does not have proper ventilation, prevents the fish from breathing at the top, and the space is too small. It has to have enough room for swimming because betta fish love to swim around.

This fish likes to breathe in atmospheric air when it gets to the top of the water because it has a labyrinth organ. So, make sure that it has access to the top of the water by not having any plants, such as water lilies, covering the water surface. Betta fish tanks must have a volume of about two gallons of water to provide enough space for your pet to swim around and to ensure that its fan-like tails and fins are not harmed.

Luckily, you can save some money by not having to buy a separate aeration system because the filtration device can also provide this. It can cause bubbles on the water surface and this is enough for the purpose of introducing more oxygen into the water.

For medicine, you will have to search for a local expert who can recommend the proper medications for you to buy. Ask him or her for some tips on how to determine if your betta fish has some health problems because this may be evident through its physical appearance and behavior. Sometimes it may choose to remain in hiding, it may refuse to eat, or its color may change.

For food, there are various kinds to choose from, but some betta fish prefer some types more than others. You may want to experiment first before buying pellets or flakes in bulk because it may want some blood worms, brine shrimp, or glass worms instead.

If you want to successfully set up a complete fish tank, you also need to take care of a few essential accessories. Choosing a tank and a stand is crucial but among the more essential accessories are fish tank heaters. In order to keep water temperatures from changing erratically, your aquarium should have sufficient heating device.

Most fish tanks need heaters, and there are several reasons why. If you live in a place with colder climates, heating is very important. Many aquarium fish species thrive in warmer waters, so your aquarium should be able to provide a suitable environment for them. A fish tank with temperatures between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius is often ideal.

Since achieving the right temperature is important, the fish tank heater needs to be able to heat the entire aquarium properly. Thus, you need to choose a heater that suits the actual size of your fish tank. Smaller fish tanks need less powerful heaters, while larger needs require heaters with higher wattages.

Heaters do not only take care of your fish, they keep the plants inside the aquarium lush and healthy as well. Fish tank heaters are essential for the fish and plants, and must be able to provide for the heating requirements of both. Aquarium owners need to identify first if the fish and plants need the same temperature for survival.

Choosing heaters for fish tanks is also an important factor when it comes to breeding. Many aquarium fish types require a temperature of between 25 to 27 degrees Celsius in order to breed successfully. Without the right heating, the water temperature can drop below 20 degrees, which is often not suitable for most aquarium fish species to be able to breed.

You need to take note nonetheless that there are many other factors which contribute to the success rate of fish breeding. It is important that you monitor the pressure and current of the water too. The temperature of your tank is just one of the more crucial factors which you should keep an eye on. Using a thermometer will help you do this with ease.

Heaters can take some time before being able to fully warm the tank. Placing a lid on your fish tank allows for faster and more thorough heating. There are many types of heaters available in the market, so it is best to choose a top quality product. Placing the heater properly helps prevent any accidents or damage. Fish tank heaters play a crucial role in maintaining the health of your fish and aquarium plants, so it is always best to choose them with care.

One of the main considerations in taking care of tropical fish is your selection of tropical fish tank. Since there are many tropical fish tanks to choose from, outlined here are the factors you need to consider in making your selection.

Getting the right fish tank does not depend just on whether or not it will fit your living room. Though you have that to think about, the deciding factor is the fish that youre planning to take care of, and how many of them you plan to put in the tank. The advice is bigger is always better, especially for marine tropical fish that like to have lots of room to swim around in. Bigger tropical fish tanks also means that water stays pure longer, as the toxins are more easily diffused by a larger volume of water.

You can choose from 60, 80, 100 and 120 cm sizes of fish tanks. The size selection would depend on the type and number of fish that will occupy the fish tank. It also depends on the behavior of the fish that youre getting. Typically, marine tropical fish prefer larger tanks for more swimming room. The age of the fish is also a factor; you should have a tank that can accommodate the growth of young fish.

Next on your list is deciding on the shape and construction. Standard shapes, like round and rectangle, are the top choices, though there are other shapes available. Shape is more of an issue that depends on the space available in your home, and your own personal taste.

Construction would come into play when you consider the cost and the type of tropical fish that youre planning to put in the tank. Glass is heavier but cheaper, and is more resistant to scratches. Glass is also perfect for marine tropical fish as its not affected by the salinity of the water. Acrylic on the other hand, is lighter yet more expensive. Its also sturdier than glass, but is easily scratched. It may also be affected by saltwater so its not the best for marine tropical fish.

Once you decide on the construction and type, youd need to consider the equipment. The important devices you should have are a heater and a thermometer. As tropical fish are accustomed to warm temperatures, you would need to simulate that in the fish tank. Thats what the heater is for.

Aside from that, tropical fish are also sensitive to temperature changes, so you also need a thermometer to check that the temperature is at the right level. Of course, you would also need the standard aquarium devices such as lighting, filter, and air pump along with the heater and thermometer.

These are some of the basic things you need to know in selecting a tropical fish tank. Keeping these things in mind will result to you getting the right fish tank for your tropical fish, which results to the healthy well-being of your pets. Aside from that, it would also result to your satisfaction in having tropical fish right at your own home.
