If you are considering taking on a pet that is not just your average household pet such as the cats and dogs that your neighbors keep, it may be time to get a reptile. Reptiles as pets are fast becoming a popular option among people who want to own exotic pets and who want an animal that will need a relatively low amount of maintenance. There are several additional reasons why opting to keep reptiles as pets can be better than keeping cats or dogs.

Why Choose Reptiles?

Reptiles are known to be highly affordable and they are easy to maintain as well. Turtles can be purchased for about $10 and you can get your own iguana for as little as $4. These pets also tend to be quite small which means that you do not need a tremendous amount of space in order to keep them. Unlike dogs or cats, these animals do not roam the house a lot, nor do they leave large clumps of fur everywhere. Reptile skin is usually shed all at once and cleaning this up is typically very easy as reptiles tend to stay in their enclosures. Reptiles are exceedingly exotic, which means that you will certainly learn more about caring for this type of animal and maintaining the proper environment for keeping a reptile. In fact, many of the people who purchase reptiles as pets develop an increased appreciation for the natural habitats of animals living in the wild. This is due in large part to the fact that reptiles tend to thrive in environments that are dramatically different from our own.

The Responsibilities

In spite of the abundance of benefits that can come from owning reptiles as pet, there are several aspects of maintenance that people should know about. First, while reptiles are generally not costly, the people who wish to own them will typically need to spend several hundred dollars on gallon tanks, food, special light fixtures that are specific to basking, and substrates. You will additionally need to purchase prey for food and food supplements. For instance, many experts state that the set-up for a new green iguana is approximately $300, however, it will be less for reptiles that are smaller in size. If you want your pet to grow at a healthy rate as time passes, you will need to purchase larger enclosures.

Becoming a responsible owner of a reptile requires some research and education concerning the selected species. It is important to keep in mind that these animals are not considered affectionate pets. Some may even suffer from too much human contact. In some instances, it can even be dangerous to handle the reptile. These are important things to consider when choosing a pet from this category.

Reptiles are interesting and exotic pets. Reptiles as pets will benefit owners in many ways, but it is also important to be reminded that reptiles have very special needs. Although reptiles are not as expensive as pedigree dogs and cats, their needs will require substantial investments in money and time that you must be able to provide if you want to be a responsible pet owner.

When choosing a pet, it is important to consider the household in which it will live. Addressing issues such as available space, habitat restrictions, presence of roommates and even small children can help an individual decide if keeping a reptile is feasible. Responsiblity and accountability are also traits that a reptile owner must possess or harm could come to them and even the animal.

Be sure to check turtle facts and tortoise facts for information about turtles.

Copperhead snakes are the cause of most of the snake-bite problems in the United States. The copperhead can be distinguished by its thick shape and its neck, which is quite distinct from its body as well as by its pale cross-band tan pattern that darkens in the middle and on the sides.

Copperhead snakes have pale bellies, which makes it look very similar to its background, but their colourisation also be whitish sometimes. There are obvious spots or pits on the heads of these animals that appear like tiny dark specks. There is also a rather vague stripe on its head behind its eyes; less prominent on the top, the stripe gets a lot darker towards the sides of the snake’s head.

Copperheads live in a wide variety of habitats. They can be found under rocks, in woods and on river banks or in pond areas. Their choice of abode is dictated by the presence of prey, as they like to live on frogs, small rodents, cicadas, lizards, caterpillars and anything else that is no match for their size.

Among the best hide-outs for the copperhead, wood piles, stone slabs, walls, debris and abandoned or ruined buildings are the most common, which explains the possibility of a human encounter with them in such areas. These snakes are most active in the spring and summer months and as long as the weather stays warm, after which they enter the hibernation period.

Copperhead snakes return to the same dens to hibernate year after year, and more often than not, there are large nests counting many individuals during hibernation. On very hot summer days, copperhead snakes will remain in cooler areas during the day and use the cover of the night to hunt. On balmy summer days, the copperhead will lie in the sun on rocks or wooden debris. Copperheads do not hatch eggs, but give birth to their young live. The number of young ranges from one to fourteen and they are usually born from the summer untill October.

The bites of copperhead snakes must have immediate medical care since they are not only very painful but they may also lead to permanent scarring and tissue loss. Avoid copperhead snakes when you come across them, since many people get bitten when trying to kill or handle them.

Snakes will not harm you unless they sense danger, when you will see how fiercely they can defend themselves. Statistics indicate that these snakes are the most frequent life threateners in the US, because these Copperhead attack quite out of the blue without sending any warning signals like other species do.

The Florida snakes, along with the turtles, lizards, alligators and other reptiles are all part of a complicated wildlife structure that plays a marvelous role in the maintenance of Florida’s ecosystem. There are numerous species of Florida snakes. There are forty-four species living in an incredibly varied habitat, ranging from salt marshes and fresh water marshes to dry uplands and coastal mangrove swamps to residential regions.

Only six Florida snakes are venomous and they happily coexist with their non-poisonous cousins. They even go into towns and cities too. The best way to stay out of harm’s way with snakes is to learn their morphology and therefore be able to identify the various Florida snakes. The best approach to adopt in relation to all snakes is avoidance.

The Coral snakes and pit vipers are by far the most dangerous of the Florida snakes. They are identifiable by quite a range of common characteristics. Pit vipers which include the Rattlesnake, the Cottonmouth and the Copperhead all have in common: vertical eye pupils, a v-shaped head and facial pit sensors: one between the eyes and nostrils and the others along each side of the head.

The venom of this type of Florida snakes is haemotoxic, which means that their poison works on the red blood cells, destroying the walls of the blood vessels and causing uncontrolled bleeding. Coral snakes however, use a neurotoxic venom, the toxins of which act on the body’s nerves causing paralysis.

Most of the snake bites reported every year in the United States are caused by Florida snakes or by rattlesnakes to be more precise. Because their venom spreads very quickly throughout the body, the victim will die within less than thirty minutes without immediate anti-venom.

A major exception in this group of Florida snakes is the copperhead, the venom of which very rarely, if ever, requires anti-venom. Their toxin is the least potent and thus they are considered the least dangerous of the venomous Florida snakes.

It is precisely because of the danger that they present that poisonous snakes get the most attention, although the most widespread of Florida snakes is the Black Racer, which is a non-toxic species that depends on its sharp fangs to capture its prey.

Despite the fact that home owners usually try to eradicate snakes from their gardens, specialists stress that, without them, rodents would soon be so numerous as to be an even greater cause for alarm.

Therefore, unless you have special causes for concern, like snakes breeding in great numbers in your garden or outhouses for example, there is no valid reason to interfere with the lives of these usually retiring, helpful animals.

They instill in the minds of the people that large snakes hunt and treat people as their prey. Contrary to what is shown in the movies, large snakes do not hunt humans. Most of the time, they prefer to stay away from humans and enjoy their solitude.

One of the large species of snake noted in the world are the African rock python, Burmese python, reticulated python and Anaconda.

The African rock python is considered to be the third largest snake in the world. It can grow up to 30 feet in length and can weigh 250 lbs. Brown marks outlined by black on tan background surround its body. Like most of the pythons, African rock python kills its prey by constricting it. It can live for a year without eating if the size of the animal it eats is enough to sustain it. African rock python is dormant during dry season.

The Burmese python is one of the species of large snakes in the world. It is also the top choice of pet owners who want to have a giant animal as pet. However, the Burmese python is often abandoned by its owner in the long run because it can grow up to 23 feet, weigh 200 lbs. and their girth as big as telephone pole. This size is more than a single person can handle. Burmese python hunts its prey using heat sensors along their jaws and chemical receptors in their tongue. They feed on mammals and birds. Oftentimes, Burmese pythons are hunted for their skin, which is used to make bags and shoes, making the Burmese python one of the endangered species in the world.

Reticulated python is considered as the longest snake in the world for it can grow up to 34 feet. It has a slender body and is rarely found in places away from fresh water. Reticulated python can grow to an average length of 10- 20 feet. They live in the coast of Southeast Asia. Some types of Reticulated python are: Albino, Ambom Yellowhead, Axanthic, Borneo Bateater, Calico, Calico Tiger, Dwarf, Granite Backed, Jungle, Silver and Sulawesi. Reticulated pythons, contrary to most pythons, are irritable and defensive.

Anacondas are also one of the large species of snakes in the world. They are native in South America. Its size enables it to win the title “king.” Anaconda can grow to an average of 17 feet, however, it can grow as large as 28 feet and can weigh as heavy as 215 lbs. Anacondas can grow huge that they prefer living in water to support their weight.

These are just some of the large species of snakes in the world. More often than not, pythons retreat from human approach. It is in very rare instances that snakes, if not properly fed and irritated, attack humans. Most of these large snakes live in jungles far from human habitat. If they happen to be found in human dwellings, it is best to leave them at peace and give them their space. Most of the time they mind their own business, thus has to be treated with respect.

The author additionally frequently gives advice on things such as the beverage coolers and bottle cooler.

If you have a growing iguana, you may find that you need to construct a custom reptile cage for it. Adult iguanas get very big, so you’ll need to take a look around your house to find an appropriate spot. You may want to build outside, or it may be simpler for you to build in an empty room or the garage. You might even be able to make use of an unused closet.

Iguanas must have a cage that gives them lots of room to move around without restriction, and the home also needs to be tall enough for them to climb. The habitat needs to be 1-1/2 times as long as the iguana, at minimum, and deep enough for the iguana to turn around comfortably. Full grown green iguanas will also need a habitat that is at least 6 feet tall, with plenty of space for climbing. You’ll also need to be sure that the structure is properly maintained for both humidity levels and temperature, and of course, it will need to be secure against escape.

A closet is fairly easy to secure for use as a home for smaller iguanas. It’s a very easy matter to remove the door and replace it with a screen door or frame. Some people prefer to use Plexiglas, which also works great, but you’ll want to make sure that you head off overheating by allowing for plenty of ventilation. An enclosed area like a closet makes it easier to maintain variables like humidity and temperature. You can use the area above the closet rod for affixing basking and UV lights, after blocking it off with a screen panel.

If your iguana is more than four feet in length, you may be best off building him an outdoor enclosure. As long as you live in a warmer climate, iguanas can do quite well outside, but if they will need to be protected from low temperatures when the the weather gets colder. It may help to have an indoor area, like a garage to use in cooler months. An advantage of outdoor enclosures is that it allows your iguana the opportunity to bask in natural UV rays from the sun, which is so important for it’s health.

These ideas for large reptile cages are just a few of the possible solutions for bigger lizards. There are plenty of ways you can customize your pet’s habitat to make it more comfortable. Use your imagination, and remember that the proper enclosure will help your pet live a healthier and longer life.

These tips for providing a home for your pet iguana are just scratching the surface.

Green Iguanas, also knows by their Latin name Iguana Iguana, come from tropical areas of Central and South America. They are a large lizard, often growing up to 6 feet in captivity, if they are well fed and housed properly. They have long tails which make up about half of their length.

Despite the name ‘green iguana’, the color of your iguana as it grows may actually change. Although typically a brilliant emerald green when young, their color can change to a duller green or even a grayish or brownish-red color. You may also notice black stripes on them. The amount of sun your iguana receives will affect the color of its skin.

Iguanas are tree dwelling – or arboreal – animals, and pass most of their day climbing around in trees, eating leaves, fruit and flowers. Being up in the branches of the trees also helps them avoid being prey to predator animals that eat iguanas. Iguanas have several physical adaptations that make them perfectly suited to living in the treetops. Their striped green coloring is a great camouflage for them as they crawl among the branches and leaves of the trees. They have feet with long ‘fingers’ and claws that are especially suited to climbing and grasping the branches, and their long tail help them maintain their balance.

Despite their fearsome appearance, iguanas are vegetarians that are hunted as prey by other animals. They have developed keen senses that allow them to avoid predators. With their keen senses of hearing, smell and sight, they can often detect predators long before the predator knows the iguana is around.

One of the iguana’s best defense mechanisms is it’s tail, and it can use it in various ways to protect itself. Not only does it help with balance as the iguana jumps from branch to branch, it can be used as a weapon. Iguanas will swing their tails like a whip when cornered or if they feel threatened. Also, iguanas are very good swimmers, and can use their tail as a rudder when making their getaway.

Iguanas have a few other adaptations that help in their survival in the wild. They’re quite tough, and can survive falls from high in the trees. Male iguanas have a fold of skin under their chin, called a ‘dewlap’. This flap of skin is used to make the iguana appear larger to any threat, and is also used to impress the lady iguanas. Finally, iguanas store fat around their chin and neck during times when they find plenty of food, and this way are more able to survive when food is hard to find.

Lots of people keep iguanas as pets without knowing that they come from the tropics, and have specific habitat, food, and light requirements to survive as pets. If an iguana as pet isn’t cared for properly, they can die very slow and painful deaths. If you are thinking about getting an iguana, please start by learning about it’s care.

The snake called the spitting cobra is one of the most peculiar species as it not only has a venomous bite but it also sprays venom into the eyes of its prey and aggressors. Contact of this venom with your eyes can be very painful and even temporarily blinding, therefore, if you get cobra venom in your eyes, irrigate them immediately in order to prevent permanent tissue damage.

The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is also unusual in this large family of snakes (elapidae) because it feeds almost exclusively on other snakes with mice and small birds also making up part of its diet.

The King Cobra is also unique because of its size – it can reach 5.85m (almost 20 feet) in length, which makes it the longest poisonous snake in the world. The latest discovery of a new species of cobra was made in 2003 when it was identified by London Zoo as part of an illegal shipment of exotic pets.

DNA studies revealed that this new species of snake is similar to the red spitting cobra but has different genes. It seems to originate from an area between Sudan and Egypt and it has been called the ‘Nubian Spitting Cobra’.

Although they are highly dangerous when threatened cobras will rarely attack if you keep your distance from them, although the spit can travel very accurately for two meters. Compared to the strike of a rattlesnake, the cobra is rather slow in its attack and besides that, many bites prove to be non-venomous.

According to a study conducted on Malaysian cobra snake victims only 55% of the bites involved venom release and the same statistics indicate a mortality rate of 10% for people bitten, since the toxins injected into the blood of the prey destroy the nerves (neurotoxin) , which induces respiratory failure half an hour after being bitten, giving you 30 minutes to get help.

The colouration is variable from light green-grey to black, while juveniles are yellow and black banded. This snake can find a habitat all over south-eastern Asia.

If you own a pet than you are already aware that you will always need to purchase pet supplies but, you just dread heading to your local pet store because it is such a hassle. Well, there is a great solution to this dreaded task. Go and visit online pet stores instead. These stores are a great option for you if for any reason you find yourself not able to make it to a real pet store.

You may even live too far away from your local pet store that it becomes inconvenient to make regular trips to the store. Or even if you happen to be elderly or disabled making the trip to a pet store can quickly become a very difficult task to undertake. Along with these issues along with a busy life style more and more people are turning to the online pet stores for all the pet supply needs.

If you are looking for ways to cut your daily errands in half purchasing your pet supplies from online stores also makes great sense. There are so many different types of stores that are available on the Internet today that you can choose from but, you will have to practice caution because some of these stores are not as good as some of the others. Also if you take the time to narrow down what you are looking for will help you find what you are looking for the first time.

One of the most obvious things that you should consider before purchasing is if they carry the supplies for the pet you are searching for. Most of these online stores will carry supplies and products for the more common types of animals but, they do not have a wide selection available for the more exotic pets. You want to find the pet stores that will provide you with all your supplies in one stop.

Another thing that you should take the time to consider is how easy it is for you to navigate your way through the online store. If you are able to find exactly what you are looking for in just a few short clicks of your mouse you are way ahead of the game. If you have to search through dozens of pages however, you may want to decide on a different site.

Next take the time to check the shipping time and rates. If you are needing something right away you want to be sure that it will arrive on time. But you also do not want to end up paying an arm and a leg for shipping either.

Finally take the time to check out the return policy of the store. Do they offer you plenty of time to return the product if you find that it is not what you were originally thinking of?

Once you find a store that you are happy with you will find that you will always buy your supplies through them. You will come to enjoy the convenience of one stop shopping with never having to leave the house.

Animal lovers can choose from a variety of birds, kittens, and puppies at these convenient and locally owned pet stores Brampton. They can also find top quality pet food and supplies to accommodate the needs of puppies Toronto.

If you are thinking of getting a new pet, and have considered existing pets and in particular a large snake such as a boa, it is imperative that you are aware of several factors and think them over carefully. Please consider the following two issues:

Size: The most common variety of boa constrictor, the boa constrictor imperator can grow as long as eight feet in length and if that fails to impress, perhaps the fact that the red tailed boa constrictor can grow even larger than ten feet or more will make you realise just how large and powerful these animals are. A fully matured snake that has managed to achieve this size will require a considerable amount of space, not to mention a regular supply of large prey such as rats or even rabbits.

The lifespan of a boa: If you are planning on purchasing a boa, then you need to be aware that you will need to be prepared for a long term commitment which can easily stretch as long as 30 years. You need to consider how you will accommodate your boa’s needs during the course of any major changes in your personal circumstances, what if you are taken to hospital for an extended period of time? Do you know of anyone who would be prepared to clean and feed a 10 foot snake for you?

Now that we have considered some of the practical issues, let us now raise another, equally important question: is a boa constrictor really worth all the hard work?

Snakes are classified as exotic pets and the amount of pleasure that they bring the lucky owners who are fortunate enough to own them is immeasurable. I speak from personal experience for I have owned and cared for a large number of different reptilian friends over the years, but it is the boas that really capture my heart. Some people take one look at them and feel fairly intimidated by them as they fear that they are dangerous or that the boa will strike at any moment. In reality, most captive boas are docile creatures indeed and to be perfectly blunt, they are probably much more frightened of you than you are of them. Just be gentle, patient and reassuring with them and give them the respect they deserve, since no matter how docile they seem they are still large and powerful animals.

Whilst there can be no denying that snakes require a very precise regime of temperature, humidity and diet, they are actually very low maintenance. Cats and dogs maybe the more popular forms of pets but if truth be told, the reality of the matter is that they can be a major burden on their owner. This is because the owner has to contend with their constant demands for exercise, food, attention and the cat/dog will not stop whining until they get what they want. The snake on the other hand, will require only a few minutes each day and otherwise can be left alone.

Boa constrictors are gorgeous, docile and simply awesome pets which can bring a considerable amount of happiness to the right kind of person. You may find it of some practical use if you were to speak with fellow boa constrictor owners and get their opinion on the matter. Whilst they maybe a little biased in favour of owning a boa as a pet, they will be able to tell you what problems you may encounter. Do your research, read up on the subject, speak with other reptile keepers and make your decision carefully, but if you do choose to keep snakes I’m sure you won’t regret the decision!
