A beautiful Labrador Retriever has just joined your family, you’ve obtained all the needed items, like a leash and a food bowl, gotten him a checkup and shots and begun dog training classes. Now it’s time to sit back and relax, right? Wrong.
Most cats and almost all dogs will require more than just preventative veterinary attention during their life. It could be something fairly minor, like a bacterial infection or a rash, or it might be significant, like a car accident or cancer. It could take place when your dog is young and seemingly in good physical shape, or it might come with old age. Your beloved canine might go to see the doctor only a few times over the years, or he could be one of those that your vet recognizes on sight.
From a monetary perspective, the uncertaintly is the problem. You could make plans if you knew how much you could expect to spend on veterinary care over your dog’s lifetime. You could put money aside each month to cover the expenses.
But as any pet owner can attest, that’s not how it works. When your pet needs pricey health care, it usually happens suddenly and unexpectedly. At the same time you’re wondering if your pet is going to pull through, you’re also wondering how much this is going to cost. Then of course you feel bad because how can you think of money at a time like this?
The best way to decrease anxiety at a time like this, and to protect your pocketbook at the same time is to make a plan for the vet expenses long before your pet gets ill or hurt. Carry out your own review of pet insurance policies and identify the one that offers the best possible protection for the cost for your Labrador while she’s still a puppy – if at all possible before he has the opportunity to get sick or hurt!
Labs and other purebred dogs are the most costly to buy insurance for, and there’s a reason for that. Dogs are more likely to require costly medical care than cats, partly because they get into more mishaps. Cats can stay out all night, dodging dogs, cars and other dangers. Dogs, especially young dogs, are more likely to run out into the street or have some other mishap.
Because of inbreeding, purebreds are more likely than mixed breeds to develop certain diseases. Labs are susceptible to elbow and hip dysplasia, cataracts and skin allergies. Most reputable breeders make sure that they only breed dogs who are free from hereditary health problems. Even so, these kinds of issues keep cropping up for Labs, and they’re often costly.
When you evaluate pet insurance policies be sure to check whether they cover hereditary conditions. Those that do will obviously cost more, but it’s worth it. After all, the reason you need a pet insurance policy in the first place is to protect yourself against large unpredicted charges. If you buy insurance based only on price, you might find out at the worst possible time that you aren’t covered as well as you thought you were. That defeats the purpose of purchasing veterinary insurance in the first place.
Take your time and evaluate several policies. Don’t settle on one unless it meets your needs. It’s out there.
