The best thing to do is to duplicate the environment chinchillas are use to, this will help make your chinchilla happy and comfortable. In the wild chinchillas live in higher altitudes, and the climate is usually dry and cool. Chinchillas do better if they are kept in a 55 to 70 degree temperature.
Heat strokes are quite easy for these animals to have if they are not kept in temperatures lower than around 82 degrees. They should also be kept in low humidity, so their cage should be in a room with good ventilation and no dampness. You should consider putting their cage in a place with plenty of light but no direct sunlight.
It is nice to have your chinchilla where you can see it and be near it, but if you have a very active household you may want to put the cage somewhere a little quieter. If the chinchilla becomes stressed because of all the activity they will be very unhappy. If you do not have another room to move the cage to, you could simply cover the cage with a thin sheet.

Keep your chinchilla cage clean if you want to avoid a stinking cage. Chinchillas do not have very much odor when they have clean cages. The size of the chinchilla cage and if there are multiple chinchillas will determine how often you need to clean the cage.
These animals are quite active and because of this they need toys to stay busy. A wheel is a great way to help them run off some energy and give them something to do. Chew toys are a must if you want to keep your chinchillas teeth straight and short. Chinchillas are great pets as long as you have the time to look after them properly.
