Toy Group

Companion dogs bred for the lap, not the field.

Toy breeds were bred for one job: company. They are small enough to carry, easy to keep in an apartment, and most of them want to be wherever you are. That closeness is the whole appeal, and it is also the catch. A dog that bonds this hard does not love being left alone for ten hours, and a few of these breeds will tell the whole building about it.

Do not let the size fool you on temperament. A Min Pin or a Yorkie has as much drive and opinion as dogs three times their weight. They train well when you treat them like real dogs instead of accessories. The ones that suit a calm home (the Cavalier, the Pug) are very different animals from the ones that want a job (the Papillon, the Min Pin), so read past the cuteness before you pick.
