Maltipoo

A maltipoo decides you are its person and then never really lets that go. Mine would track me from room to room and settle wherever I landed, close enough to touch. That devotion is the whole appeal, and it is also the catch. These dogs are bred from two companion breeds that were never meant to spend the day alone, so a maltipoo left for eight or nine hours can spin into barking, pacing, and chewing the baseboard. If your house empties out every weekday and stays empty, this is not your dog. A cockapoo runs a little more independent, and even that is a stretch.

Training, on the other hand, is easy. The Poodle half makes them quick, and the Maltese half makes them want to please you, so sit, down, and a solid recall come together in a week or two of short sessions. Pay with food, keep it upbeat, and quit while they still want more. The one habit you have to build on purpose is calm alone-time. Crate train from day one, leave for two minutes and come back like it is nothing, then five, then twenty. Do that early and you head off the separation anxiety the breed is famous for. Skip it and you will be doing damage control for a year.

The other thing nobody warns new owners about is the barking. Maltipoos are alert little dogs with strong opinions about the mail carrier, the neighbor’s cat, and any sound after 9 p.m. It is trainable, but you have to actually train it instead of yelling, which only adds to the noise. Reward quiet, teach a “that’s enough,” and manage the triggers. A morkie is cut from the same loud cloth, so if a silent dog is the goal, look elsewhere.

For exercise, plan on a real walk plus a play session, then they nap on the couch. Twenty to forty minutes a day, split up, covers it. At five to twelve pounds they are not built for distance, so a 10K trail run is out, but they will happily chase a ball around the living room until they flop over. Their size makes them genuinely apartment-friendly, which is half of why people pick them.

Now the part that surprises people: grooming. That low-shedding coat does not drop the dead hair, it holds onto it, so it mats. The face, the ears, the armpits, and the back legs felt up fast if you let them. Brush down to the skin three or four times a week, not just over the top, and book a groom every six to eight weeks or learn the topknot trim yourself. Wipe the eye area too, because Maltipoos are prone to tear staining that turns the white fur rusty. The owners who love their maltipoo and the owners who are fried by theirs are usually separated by one habit: whether they keep up with the brush.

Health-wise the small size brings a few things to watch. Luxating patella is the common one, where the kneecap slips, and it shows up as a little skip-step in the back legs. They are prone to dental disease because tiny mouths crowd the teeth, so brush them and expect cleanings. The Poodle line can pass on progressive retinal atrophy, and either parent can hand down eye and heart issues. Buy from a breeder who health-tests both parents, keep up with dental care, and you stack the odds in your favor. Expect $1,200 to $2,500 up front from a responsible breeder, then a few hundred a year in grooming if you farm it out.

Get a maltipoo if you are home a good chunk of the day, you want a dog that is glued to you and easy to teach, and you go in honest about the brushing and the barking. Skip it if you travel constantly or you picture a quiet, low-touch dog that entertains itself. For the right home it is one of the best little companions going. It just asks for your time, your lap, and a brush.
