How to test a morkie name before you commit

Once you have a shortlist, do this before it goes on a tag. Stand across a room and say each name once, in a normal happy voice, the way you would actually call the dog. The right one feels easy in your mouth and cuts clean. The wrong one makes you raise your voice or say it twice, and that is your answer. Then say it back to back with your other pets’ names, your kids’ names, and the words “no,” “sit,” “stay,” and “down.” If it clashes or blurs with any of them, cross it off, because you will be saying all of those in the same five minutes for the next dozen years.

Morkies raise the stakes on this a little, because you will often be calling the dog over the top of its own barking. A name with a hard consonant and a bright vowel cuts through that noise. A soft, mushy name gets lost in it. That is why I keep pushing the Gizmo and Otto end of the list over something breathy like “Willow” for a dog you actually need to call off the window.
